About Food & Trees for Africa

on
Food & Trees for Africa is a leading Section 21 Social Enterprise that addresses the issues of food security and environmental sustainability. We emphasise education and skills training, which we integrate with sensitive mentorship and phased support. After 27 years of experience in South African social development, we understand what it takes to achieve real, long-term sustainability and want to make a positive difference to the lives of all South Africans.

We believe that food security and a healthy environment are fundamental human rights essential to our prosperity. There has never been a more important time to act for the good of the planet and South Africa!

Background

Started in 1990, FTFA is a South African, non-profit social enterprise with the following core objectives:
  • To contribute to food security, greening, natural resource management and sustainable business.
  • Education and training of learners, teachers and communities.
  • Promotion of environmental activities, within all sectors of society.
  • Promotion of sustainable economic development, improved environments, and enhanced livelihoods.
  • Building capacity and skills within agriculture, urban forestry and climate change adaptation.
FTFA has distributed 4.5 million trees, facilitated the creation of thousands of natural food gardens and mentored some of the most successful small-scale, emerging farmers in the country.

FTFA works in partnership with the private sector, government, aid agencies, other non-profit organisations, media and individuals. We believe that working with these sectors will solve issues relating to environment, food security and sustainable livelihoods.

This approach leads to healthier lives for impoverished communities, more sustainable green environments and increased awareness of how we, as human beings, impact the planet and what we can do to address this.

FTFA has seven recognised programmes:

  • Food Gardens for Africa
  • FEED Africa (Farmer Eco-Enterprise Development)
  • Trees for All
  • Trees for Homes
  • Bamboo for Africa
  • The EduPlant School Programme
  • African Climate Reality Project
