BallStraathof has been a loyal supporter of Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) for many years through the donation of packets of vegetable and flower seeds. These seeds are distributed to the many disadvantaged community food gardening projects and schools that FTFA supports with the help of sponsors. In 2010, FTFA received a very large donation of seeds from BallStraathof which were distributed through the Trees for Homes, Trees for All and Food Gardens for Africa programmes. In a separate donation, each of the schools chosen for the EduPlant competition received seed packs from BallStraathof. FTFA was also able to respond to a few general requests for seeds from outside parties.

The seed donations have contributed significantly to greening of residential areas. Once a home has a tree, the homeowners appear to take a renewed sense of pride in their surroundings, and often plant the veggie seeds under the shade of the new tree. This begins to create the awareness of climate change and the importance of plants in our lives. In addition to this, the seeds contribute significantly to addressing food security.
