kulula celebrates Earth Day 2011

Let’s forget about carbon for one day and focus on a simple fact: trees are life. Over a billion people living in extreme poverty rely on forests to survive. They need trees to provide food, shelter, fuel, and to preserve the very fabric of their culture. And we all need the oxygen they provide, the food, fuel, shelter, building materials, shade, and beauty. So lets get planting this Earth Day!

The theme for Earth Day 2011, 22 April, is A Billion Acts of Green, recognising the power of millions of individual actions around greening our environment so we and future generations can live and act sustainably.

Talking about individual action, kulula fans raised a whopping R1 million to support South Africa’s national greening enterprise Food & Trees for Africa’s (FTFA) efforts to respond to climate change and improve environments, especially for the poor.  This was done through kulula’s Project Green Programme, which aims to combat the atmospheric carbon loads and greenhouses gases released by its aircraft.

By February 2009 Project Green had planted 2009 trees. Now, thanks to the thousands of kulula fans who contributed money every time they flew, thousands more trees and hectares of bamboo will be planted for disadvantaged communities throughout South Africa this year. “We want to say thank you to all our fans who opened their hearts – and pockets – to support this worthy cause,” says kulula Marketing Manager, Nadine Damen.

At over 45 million actions to date, A Billion Acts of Green campaign – the largest environmental service campaign in the world – is steadily building commitments by individuals, corporations, and governments in honour of Earth Day. FTFA would like to encourage all companies and individuals to do something good and green this Earth Day.

kulula will be planting 1 000 trees through FTFAs Trees for Homes programme for residents of Tembisa. “This follows the 1 000 kulula fan trees distributed on World Wetlands Day in February 2011,” says Solomon Mondlane, FTFA Community Forester. “We are attempting to create an urban forest in Tembisa, one of the largest townships on the East Rand.”

“Together we can make our planet a better place to live in. A lot still needs to be done to get the message across to our people. By one simple positive act, one can change our planet for the better. Kulula has proven its commitment to the people of Tembisa,” continued Mr Mondlane
