Why pick flowers, plant a tree instead!

Roses, chocolates and cards with teddy bears on them?

While there is nothing wrong with the conventional image of Valentine’s Day that February 14th conjures up, isn’t it time we really thought about what a day of sharing love should be all about and give a gift that won’t land up in a dusty box on a shelf somewhere a few months hence? Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) believes that we need to show our planet some love. After all this is our home, the only one we are likely to ever know, and not just on February 14th, but everyday.  How about starting a long and enduring love affair this Valentine’s Day by celebrating a relationship with planet Earth?

Give the perfect gift this Valentine’s Day, one that not only gives joy to your special someone, but keeps on growing and giving to the planet. It’s really so simple...just plant a tree in the name of a loved one or friend. Not only will this unique gift help to capture the heart of your Valentine but it is also a wonderful way to commemorate this special event and show you care.

FTFA will send your special someone a colourful certificate acknowledging the planting of the tree/s in their name, along with your personalised Valentine’s message on it.  Your tree gift is planted in the name of your recipient in disadvantaged or needy areas, in response to the hundreds of applications received for trees.

FTFA has been working on this relationship with the Earth for 22 years with sustainable development through greening, climate change action, sustainable natural resource management and permaculture food gardening programmes. FTFA belives that now is the time to really give back to the one who sustains us all, planet Earth. FTFA has planted more than 4.1 million trees, 80 hectares of bamboo and  facilitated the creation of thousands of organic food gardens for the poorest communities. Now, wouldn’t you like to get in on this kind of action?

Trees are a symbol of life, a lasting gift that cleans our air, acts as a carbon sink, limits erosion, provides shade, reduces noise, helps to keep our water clean, provides fruit, nuts and medicine, as well as a habitat for wildlife. What’s more not only does your gift give something special to the recipient, it also makes life a little greener and healthier for those living in harsh, dusty and barren environments.

Go on, don’t just give something this Valentine’s Day, give something back.  It’s the beginning of a beautiful relationship with planet Earth, and, best of all, it will still be going strong this time next year long after the rose petals have turned to dust.
