Green Drinks: Dan Schreiber

FTFA will host several Road to Paris Green Drinks events this year with speakers from government, business and civil society.
 
The first one will be held on the 21 May, 17:30 at FTFA Khaya, 94 Bessemer Street, Wendywood, Johannesburg. The speaker is Dan Schreiber, a gardener, visionary, father, inspirational storyteller, speaker & lecturer with B Sc in Zoology, Marine Biology, Astrophysics, Oceanography. He is taking a short break from his EarthImagineers Tour to come and share his thoughts with us. RSVP now!

Promethium Carbon offsets carbon footprint with trees

Promethium Carbon offset its carbon footprint for the 2014 financial year by planting close to 100 trees at Skeen Primary School in Alexandra.  “The trees will grow and offset both our direct business related emissions such as travelling and the diesel generator as well as the emissions associated with our electricity consumption,” said Promethium director Harmke Immink.

The Climate Reality Project launches global campaign to call for strong emissions reductions in agreement in Paris

The Climate Reality Project announced its Road to Paris effort last week, a major international campaign that will bring together citizens, business leaders, non-profit organizations, and NGOs to galvanize climate action and encourage countries at December's United Nations' Framework Convention on Climate Change's 21st Conference of the Parties in Paris to sign a strong emissions reductions agreement. This would include meaningful emissions reductions commitments based on national circumstances, a system of periodic review for these commitments, and a long-term goal of net zero carbon emissions.

International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Trees play a very important role in the sustainable management of water resources.

Turning South Africa green for Earth Day 2015

Earth Day 2015 takes place on 22 April each year, and FTFA and Global Payment Technologies (GPT) have teamed up to make South Africa a little bit greener, alleviate poverty and create temporary employment to those living in Fiscksburg, Free State. 20 Community Educator’s (CE’s) were trained to help distribute 1000 trees to 1000 households. The GPT trees were distributed on 30 April in celebration of Earth Day.

2015 Road to Paris

Climate change is already a measurable reality and, along with other continents, Africa is especially vulnerable to its impacts (such as fires, floods, droughts and extreme storms).

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report, there is robust evidence that multiple components of the earth’s climate system are changing, including rising global air and ocean temperatures, rising global average sea level and many more extreme weather events.

57 FOOD GARDENS FOR SCHOOLS IN TZANEEN

A real African lesson!

After having volunteered with FTFA for a few months now, I was very excited to be invited to spend a day at the EduPlant biennial competition which is sponsored by The Woolworths Trust and Engen. I had heard much discussions and planning happening in the office during the year and was eager to see the competition come together. Included in the four days of learning were interactive workshops, school presentations, of course the award ceremony where this year’s winners are announced.

Absa puts customers behind ‘green wheels’ with 61 hectare urban forest commitment

Absa Vehicle and Asset Finance (AVAF), in partnership with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), will plant 2 426 trees – the equivalent of 61 hectares of urban forest – in the communities of Khutsong (Gauteng) and Ntuzuma (KwaZulu-Natal) as well as schools and households in the Western Cape.
