FTFA continues to receive requests from communities and schools across South Africa for assistance to develop food gardens and small scale farming projects. These are responded to as and when funding is available. Formerly called the Urban Greening and Community Food Gardening Programme, with the celebration of 20 years, FTFA renamed the programme Food Gardens for Africa. With 1 billion people hungry on the planet, Food Gardens for Africa seeks to promote and facilitate food security, food sovereignty and food safety.
Since the permaculture concept entails the use of available natural resources, it is affordable, even in poor communities. With the continual rise in food prices and the effects of the economic meltdown being felt everywhere, it is more important than ever before that people are able to grow their own food whilst sustaining the environment. Many communities and schools apply to FTFA for assistance to develop Permaculture (natural) foodgardens or greening projects. At present there are hundreds of such applications on file awaiting assistance. FTFA raises funds to assist as many of these as possible through the provision of training and access to materials and resources. In order to assess and "weed out" those that will be viable, FTFA implements the Permaculture Starter Pack.
