First distance learning course to assess mandatory carbon footprint reporting in South Africa

Well done to Joanne Rolt, FTFAs Trees for Home sna dEduPlant Manager who received a bursary in celebration of this course. The first Global Carbon Exchange(GCX) Certified Carbon Footprint Analyst course, offered by distance learning institution INTEC in partnership with the GCX,  to teach the green audit skills required to comply with mandatory greenhouse gas emission reporting, was officially launched in Cape Town.

The South African Government has recognised a serious environmental issue and will soon be implementing mandatory reporting as well as legislation regarding carbon dioxide emissions, where penalties for non compliance will be enforced.
Industry must prepare itself for a new era, and as awareness about the advent of mandatory greenhouse gas emission reporting sinks in, businesses will have to grapple with the challenge of securing adequate skills to implement assessments to benchmark their success in reducing emissions.

In a proactive reaction to the expected surge in demand, INTEC, a leader in distance learning  in Southern Africa, is offering the GCX Certified Carbon Footprint Analyst course via correspondence – the first of its kind in South Africa.

Global Carbon Exchange (GCX) is a leading International Carbon and Energy measurement, management and reduction consultancy set up by concerned individuals in response to the global threat of climate change. With offices in South Africa, USA, Namibia, Indonesia, Australia and the Ukraine, GCX aims to accelerate the move to a low carbon economy by working with all kinds of organizations to reduce green house gas emissions and initiate reduction projects.

“GCX works with companies and governments around the world using our unique end-to-end carbon and energy measurements and management process to help our customers make the right choices at the right time for their business,” explains Ed Gluckman, Managing Director, GCX South Africa.

“The GCX Carbon Footprint Analyst course is designed to educate individuals on the key areas required in order to become a carbon footprint analyst.   Learners will be taken through the logical steps required to complete a carbon footprint assessment and on completion will have the skills and knowledge required to complete a carbon footprint assessment in accordance with global best practice:  GHG Protocol and ISO14064.”

On aligning themselves with INTEC, Gluckman says that as one of the most respected distance learning organizations in Africa, INTEC is the ideal partner for GCX to work with in order to fulfill GCX’s vision of being the key trainer of green collar professionals in South Africa.

“With its broad network of offices and long list of learners, INTEC is ideally placed to market this course to South Africans who are looking for an opportunity to become carbon footprint analysts. GCX and INTEC have significant expectations of this alliance and hope that our relationship will bear fruit for many years to come. This is by all accounts the beginning of a journey for both of us.”

“Intec is proud to be the first and only institution offering the GCX course via correspondence,” says Phillip Slatter, Intec College Principal.

“After completing the course, which can be done over a three to six month period, course graduates acquire a skill set that is highly in demand.  The green job sector is currently experiencing one of the highest growth rates globally and SA and various other international markets are struggling to meet the growing demand for qualified carbon analysts.”

The GCX Certified Carbon Footprint Analyst course through INTEC is targeted at accountants and bookkeepers who wish to further their careers and move into the high demand green job sector, business managers and owners who wish to ensure their organisations comply with current legislation as well as environmental stakeholders.
Slatter and Gluckman agree that once reporting on carbon emissions becomes mandatory, incredible opportunities within the job market for qualified carbon emissions accounting professionals will be created.
“Every financial manager will need to understand and be able to quantify their company’s carbon emissions. Just like GAPP is so critical to accountants, we believe that the Green House Gas Protocol will have similar relevance. The Carbon Footprint Analyst course being offered by INTEC prepares individuals to take advantage of this opportunity,” says Gluckman.
“INTEC have identified the GCX course as crucial in enabling South African business to have a sustainable future.  The skill set offered by the GCX course is aligned with the growing need for a sustainable environment for future generations to come, and the responsible practice of aligning business to current legislation,” concludes Slatter.

In celebration of the launch of the course, INTEC has awarded a bursary to Joanne Rolt, Programme Manager, Food & Trees for Africa.

For each GCX course enrolment in 2010, INTEC will donate a tree to Food & Trees for Africa, to offset the carbon footprint of the printed materials used for the course.
