The successful and innovative Trees for Homes public greening initiative contributes nationally in a visible way to more sustainable settlements and enhanced environments. Trees for Homes started in 2000 to address climate change, improve quality of life and create sustainable settlements by giving low-income communities fruit or indigenous trees to plant at their homes, as well as providing training, some short term paid employment and environmental awareness. This BEE, Enterprise Development, CSI and carbon offset programmes has planted 705 000 Trees for Homes since 2000, sinking 264 044.94 tons of CO2 over 15 years. In addition these trees have created 17 625 hectares of urban forest in poor areas and FTFA has trained and given stipends to 7 820 unemployed community educators for Trees for Homes to date.

Audi plants trees to combat Desertification

Audi SA has been offsetting their carbon footprint with the skilled assistance of United Nations award winning social enterprise Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) since 2009, instigating progress through planting as they promote South Africa’s greening. This environmentally conscious forerunner in the automotive industry has introduced 3,400 trees into barren and dusty communities this year alone, through FTFA.

To align with the focus of 2010’s World Day to Combat Desertification theme - namely soil biodiversity, benefits and preservation – Audi will distribute 440 indigenous and fruit trees in Olievenhoutsbosch, through FTFA’s Trees for Homes programme. Members of the community are being trained and employed to plant the trees properly, to inform their neighbours on greening initiatives, climate change and the care of the environment, as well as to evaluate and report back on progress.

The World Day to Combat Desertification is observed every year on 17 June. This year, the Day's slogan is, "Enhancing soils anywhere enhances life everywhere". Extensive soil degradation is halted by the planting of trees, which introduce and promote micro-organisms in the soils, rehabilitating the land to nurture and propagate a greater variety of plants in the future.

There is a close relationship between livelihood and ecosystem wellbeing, and soils that are rich in biodiversity. Healthy soils produce life, and yet soil health depends a lot on how individuals use their land. What we do to our soils determines the quality and quantity of the food we eat and how our ecosystems serve us. Our increasing ecological interdependence also means enhancing soils anywhere enhances life everywhere,” according to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

For more information about the Audi event at Olievenhoutbosch Plot 65, Camp 1 at 10h00 on 17 June, or to attend, please contact Joanne Rolt on 011 656 9802 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The World Day to Combat Desertification has been observed since 1995 to promote public awareness relating to international cooperation to combat desertification and the effects of drought, and the implementation of the UNCCD. We can celebrate the Day through organizing activities such as seminars, media events and campaigns. Every single activity involving community participation and cooperation is encouraged! The year 2010 is the International Year dedicated to Biodiversity. To this end, UNCCD aims to sensitize the public to the fact that desertification, land degradation and drought dramatically affect the biodiversity resident in the soil. http://unccd.int/publicinfo/june17/2010/menu.php

He said that Browns believe that it is the responsibility of companies such as theirs to lead the way, make changes to combat climate change and support the development of local communities.

One such community is Boipatong south of Johannesburg, a township known for the violent massacre that took place between members of political parties of KwaMadala Hostel in 1992. Many people were killed and according to residents these unhealed scars have eradicated the worth and pride of this community. In addition industrial factories nearby emit tons of emissions into the atmosphere creating an unhealthy place to live in. This township requires total rejuvenation and rehabilitation to improve the living conditions, socio-economic and environmental landscapes.

Greenest retailer and Food & Trees for Africa help make a new home for Alex residents

Pick n Pay, together with Food & Trees for Africa’s (FTFA) award-winning Trees for Homes Programme, planted 66 trees at K206 Park in Alexandra in celebration of Arbor Month.

Recently 14 000 families were relocated to free-standing and double-storey RDP houses in River Park in Alexandra, Gauteng and it is hoped that the planting of the trees will go a long way in helping  the new community to put down roots and improve their environment.

Said Bronwen Rohland, Director of Sustainable Development for Pick n Pay: “As the country’s greenest retailer we embrace the opportunity to not only provide much-needed trees in new developments such as K206 Park, but also to celebrate Arbor Month.  We would like to encourage our customers to plant their own trees at their homes and in their communities, and to assist them in doing this, trees can be purchased at Pick n Pay stores around the country or online at www.picknpay.co.za during the whole of September.”
